MOD NOTE: By its very nature... this thread is going to contain spoilers, so read at your own risk. Don't say you have not been warned :D ~Cadfael~

Don't know if this has already been done but:

If you could change a a story from one of your favourite authors, what would you do? For example if you didn't like the way an author killed some one off, or that they all survived and lived happily ever after. What would you change and why?

I wouldn't want to change the LOTR story-wise, but the constant descriptions of relatively unimportant things tended to bog it down a little, so very minor editing would do it the world of good (IMHO).

Also Martins insistence on killing characters off, while it is refreshing, is a little disconcerting especially when your just spent all that time getting to know them.

As for something specific, well

I wouldn't kill off Jimmy the Hand if I was Fiest.

He was my Fav character and would have kept him going, even if I had to do something silly like a Miracle from the Gods"

What do you think, any better suggestions?

There's a fairly minor character from A Song of Ice and Fire that I would have liked to see keep living.

Oberyn Martel, the Red Viper of Dorne (he was shaping up to such a cool character).
Though if you've got to die, I guess there's no shame in doing so fighting the Mountain that Rides :)

On the subject of Martin killing main characters off.....

They are usually only minor characters.Only 2(possibly 3 if you think Theon is dead) viewpoint characters have been killed off and one isn't dead in the full meaning of the word.2 out of 12/13 isn't really a bloodbath.

Theon's not dead?

What makes you think Theon isn't dead? Warning: I haven't read Storm of Swords yet.

Ulf64 - some people haven't read far enough to think that he is dead yet! Sammie

I'd add a love/sex scene between Gimli & Galadriel
JUST KIDDING!!!
If it is truly a classic I don't think I would want to change anything.
