Name of series with human-spaceships

Read this series a long time ago and cannot remember the names.

The main concept was that humans born with extreme physical disabilities, or those who were badly injured, are built into a spaceship. The spaceship then becomes their body. the cameras are their eyes, their sensors provide feeling. The actual human is hidden away somewhere deep in the spaceship.
I believe that these ships were partnered with fully human pilots. I cannot remember the plot but I am pretty sure it was a series.
