Cant remember title or author:
Plot: humanoid (but not Earth humans) on some distant planet
realize their Sun is flaring and getting progressively hotter.
Times are getting desperate: at stories start 2 of main characters
are using grungy weeks old bathtub water to wash with

They are part of project to build fleet of spaceships to send a select group
of people out into the stars to settles some other unknown world.

Flares happen sooner than expected, riots ensue, spaceships launch, some
not fully built yet malfunction, the surviving ships head off in different directions searching for habitable world as they receive fading radio signals from their dying planet.

book concludes with one surviving ship landing on Earth around the time of the birth of a well known holy man.

The description (and particularly the ending) makes me think of And All The Stars A Stage by James Blish, though it has been a while since I read it. Does that ring any bells?
