hello! A friend of mine had a SF short story anthology that I forget the name of, but it seemed to be from the 80's at least.
I read this story out of it that I feel like was called The Star, or The something, but I think it's different than the Arthur C. Clarke story, I read that one and it didn't ring a bell.
This story had no biblical or alien references, it was very much modern day earth people, suburban families and children, admiring a growing star, shiny and amazing in the night sky, realizing over a couple days that it's a total doom-and-gloom armageddon comet and that they're all going to die. It was a lovely story.
The last line, most memorably, was something like "The star was not getting bigger, it was getting closer."
