Has anybody written a long novel on a "space opera" style Sci Fi before? How did you develop the characters and how many did you include? How many words (for fun not serious) do you suggest?

I have one partly planned, though its for serious writing. I'm not going to write it for a long time though, cause a space setting and space travel would be quite hard to write.

One main male character. He meets up with a female character. They meet another woman. There is a small gang of enemies and the rest are just minor characters.

I'd suggest between 90,000 and 200,000 for a fun sci-fi. Don't want it to be too short or too long.
