Haven't posted in a while, and about time I did so, so, halfling races !
To begin with, with influx of so many different type of halflings (esp. with D&D halflings differeng very much from Tolkien's original hobbit), I also believe that some, other, minute characters influenced the idea of the hobbit.
As such, an idea of the race of halflings:
1. The Irish Leprechaun: FIne Irish fellow, with funny accents, drink green beer, wear green tweed more than hobbits, and are unruly and uncouth. ALmost like dwarves, except shorter. SMoke, and can dance reasonably well.
2. The ENglish Hobbit. Fat, jolly, good folk, who love good-tilled earth, handy tools, and the Stoic life. The original, and perhaps the more favoured type. Eat four times a day, as long as it's not French food and smokes.
3. (Modern) Halflings: Pointy ears, thin, elongated necks and fngers: more like minituarized version of eles, only with furry feet. Not to be confused with hobbits or leprechauns.
Not that all halflings have furry feet. As usual. Okay, leprechauns wear shoes, but only for dancing.
Any other ideas ?
