not that i want it to end any time soon. but i am almost finished ACOK and it feels like this saga could well pull a jordan and go on for a bit. does anyone know if it will end at A dance of dragons or will it go further? does martin even know when?

It will end when there is only one character left standing. Or maybe seems Martin thinks he sooo different he will let the Others win.

I think he'll take the path of Jordan!

If anything Martin seems intend on not disappointing readers the way Rob Jordan did.

He has therefore made it explicit from the beginning that there will be six books in total. That is pretty long in and of itself but still only 50% ( or less) of what Rob Jordan plans for the Wheel of Time.

The series is of truly epic size and does actually require several more books. It is important to see that the books are now not only midway, but also at a turning point. What comes now could definitly be seen as a new trilogy. In the first three books only two years of time passed. In a Feast for Crows alone this will be 5 to 6 years. It is expected by most fans that after AFFC the War of the Dawn (between the Others and all others from Westeros) will commence in full. It is likely that AFFC will be 80% leading up to these events but will show some of the war itself as well.

Book 5 is Dance with Dragons, 6 is Winds of Winter.

Though I personally hope that Martin will do it in six, the series is already huge in scale and according to GGRM it will only get much bigger in the books to come (probably through several revelations from the past). It would not be unthinkable that GRRM does a seventh book if he can't tie it all up in book six.

If Martin can keep his pace better than Jordan I wouldn´t mind if he wrote 12 books to ASoIaF http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Actually GRRM personally told me the ending, when we met in 2000. I asked him if anyone would be left standing and he replied "No, "Winds of Winter" will be a 800 page description of snow being blown over graves".

I think all characters will be dead in the end.

I think in the end Jon Snow will be high king of Westeros. I'll start another thread to say why.
