First post!
Wish it had been better news, though. According to Bureau42,...'just received word (via a friend of his on the Larry Niven Discussion mailing list) that Poul Anderson passed away last night'. (This would be the 31st July, I think).
I have yet to see this confirmed elsewhere, but if it is true it is a sad loss of one of the old-school 'greats'.
I just thought I'd pass it on - I know there are some fans out there.

Yesteday, there was a report attributed to his daughter, Astrid, in which she said that he was very ill and not expected to last out the week!
I've not seen an official confirmation as yet, but nevertheless, the news is not good!

Yesterday a friend of mine told me that Paul Anderson was dying... she was really sad.
My response was "Who is Paul Anderson?"
so, umm.. who is Paul Anderson?

Poul Anderson is (was?) one of the world's grand masters of SF and Fantasy, writing, among others, the following great books:
Fantasy:
Operation Chaos(recent sequel Operation Luna)
Three Hearts and Three Lions
The Broken Sword
SF:
The Time Patrol stories
Shield
Boat of a Million Years

I know that someone mentioned the Harvest of Stars series here as one of their faves. The Broken Sword is a brilliant example of how fantasy can be done with brevity (take note Mr J****n! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif ) and I liked The Boat of A Million Years myself. Corridors of Time is another favourite - that's in the Time patrol series, I think - and of course one hailed by many as his greatest hard science story (BIG cosmological ideas!) Tau Zero.

It is true, www.locusmag.com (http://www.locusmag.com) has brief obit.
The only thing, unfortunately, I've read by him was The High Crusade--Aliens land in Medieval Europe, but the Humans take over the ship and commandeer the space ship. A good quick read.

The world of science fiction will never be the same without Poul Anderson.

If Poul Anderson has passed away, it is a great loss to the genre we love. In my humble opinion, he was one of the best. If you haven't read The Boat of A Million Years, you should do so to gain an appreciation for this man's style and ability to intrigue his readers with a truly artistic imagination. His insight and powers of description are quite admirable and deserve greater recognition.
