Anyone read anything from this guy? He's a Australian writer I think, and has written 'Souls in the Great Machine', and 'The Micone Arrow'.

Thanks for any info. =)

I was sure you meant Sean Williams at first... he is very popular.

I have to say his Greatwinter trilogy looks very interesting. Perhaps someone else has given this author a try by now?

I've heard good things about him (from Australians), and I have Souls in the Great Machine in the TBR for an upcoming group read.

That's not very informative, is it?

The people who recommend him have good taste. :)

I read Souls in the Great Machine a while back. The idea behind the story is pretty original. SitGM takes place in a far future, post-holocaust Australia. There are some kind of killer satellites that zap any technology that is above a certain level, so civilization has only made it up to about the 19th Century (our time). Also, there is this thing called the 'call' that lures people towards the ocean and ultimately towards their death.
Anyway, the story revolves around this organization called the Library which has created a human driven computer.

From what I remember, I really got into the story at first as I devoured all of the cool ideas. But, I think I ended up stuggling to finish it because the pace was a little weird. McMullen skipped around from character to character with sometimes long stretches of time passing between the character appearances. Also, as I remember, there were too many characters to keep track of, especially after the jumps in time.
