Hi guys, i am new to this forum. I need to write a term paper on a short story. I like science fiction a lot so i thought I would do it on a science fiction short story. My english teacher doesn't read sf, so she can't recommend any stories. The story has to be more than a good story, it has to have an underlying meaning which the author is trying to get across. Symbols are also good. You guys know any stories like this? Thanx in advance.

One i am tempted to suggest right away is George Orwell's 1984, but that is really heavy stuff, but your teacher will love you for it http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Dennizm--1984 is a full-length novel. However, if it is a novel you need, then I'd recommend it wholeheartedly.
However if you need a short story, then here are some goodies for you:
The Ones who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K. LeGuin - this is considered by many as one of the best uses of symbolism in a short story.
The Last Question by Isaac Asimov - simply brilliant. One of the most profound short stories ever written.
Nightfall by Isaac Asimov - another masterpiece.
Logic of Empire by Robert A. Heinlein
If these don't suit you, then get back to me and I could recommend a pile of other Asimov stories that'd probably fit your bill. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanx a lot guys. I do need a short story, so 1984 would be a little too long. I will definately check out those stories you mentioned. Thanx again.
