Damiano`s Lute is by a guy called RA MacAvoy. He`s written quite a few novels but I`ve never read him so don`t know if he`s any good.

R(oberta) A(nn) MacAvoy is a she. And one helluva writer, though she's written mainly fantasy and only one SF-book.
(Damiano trilogy)
Damiano
Damiano's Lute
Raphael
Tea with the Black Dragon
Twisting the Rope (sequel to TwtBD)
(Lens of the World trilogy)
Lens of the World
King of the Dead
Winter of the Wolf (aka. Belly of the Wolf)
The Book of Kells
The Grey Horse
The Third Eagle (SF)
She hasn't written anything in about 10 years, which is a real pity, for she is an excellent writer and one of my all time faves.

S. Andrew Swanns four "moreau" novels are a really good read.
They are :
1- Forests of the Night.
2- Emperors of the Twilight
3- Spectres of the Dawn
4- Fearful Symmetries: The Return of Nohar Rajasthan.
Also L. Neil Smiths 'Probability Broach' is really good.
(What is it with writers using a letter for their first name?)
