I'm half way through a non-fiction book that appears to be a must read for anyone about to write a story with a battle scene included. I recommend it for all aspiring writers no matter what they are writing but particularly for those whose plot depends on death.
The book is On Killing, Little, Brown, and Company 1996, by Dave Grossman, a retired US Army officer, psychologist, and historian. The things you thought you knew about battle are suspect. After a 20-year military career myself, the things I thought I knew are suspect. And best of all, you will learn something really good about us, the human race.
Cannot recommend it too highly.
