I saw Treasure Planet this afternoon. It's an animated film for children which gives a science fiction variation on Treasure Island. So, the characters human, alien and cyborgs are in 18th century costume and the space ships are sail boats - there are laser muskets and so on and Ben Gunn is a mad robot.
It's for kids and very entertaining but I was still bugged by the fact that no effort was made to explain how the characters can walk around on deck in the vacuum interstellar space and how there are whale-like monsters floating through space -
What did people think?
Space faring ships with solar sails have appeared in SF. Cordwainer Smith has them. And there's a very beautiful story by Richard A Lupoff called Sail The Tide of Mourning which has them, they're well explained and make sense in these stories....
Still, it's a nice movie.
