So what are your gems in this genre that are often overlooked by the general fantasy readership in search of the more 'popular' books (the ones everyones heard of here eg LOTR, ASOIF, COF, WOT etc)?
Here's one to start off:
Bridge of Birds - B. Hughart

I will say Islandia by Austin Tappan Wright, Gormenghast by Meryvn Peake, anything by E.R. Eddison. More contempory writers who are possibly overlooked by some include G.G. Kay, Katherine Kerr, Ian Irvine, and Sean Russell. DrB

Dragondoom by Dennis McKiernan Quite possibly the best standalone fantasy novel I've ever read.

Try these two topics:
Books no else seems to be reading (http://www.sffworld.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3958&highlight=Books+No+One+Else+seems+to+be+reading) - considers more recently published books
Little known Authors that deserve more credit (http://www.sffworld.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=190&highlight=Little+known+authors) - a really good extensive topic

The Hobs Bargain by Patricia Briggs one of the best and certainly one of the most underrated fantasy books to hit the shelves in the last few years IMO
