I saw Ender's Game on sale the other day but hesitated about buying it. Is it good? I saw you both recommending it. I'm not really into sci-fi or modern-world-setting fantasy, although I am a Star Trek Voyager fan because I find the episodes funny and refreshing.

I like Tolkien, Jordan, Martin, Tom Clancy, Dumas & Dickens, I like the banter in the Belgariad, read the occasional Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms as light reading, and don't like Terry Brooks. You think I'd like it?

Kyria, I think you might like Ender's Game. It is not really fantasy, I'd say, but I think it is an excellent book and you definitely should give it a try.

Thanks. I'll buy it tomorrow then.

Ender's Game, Ender's War. Is it a series? I tried to check at Amazon but they don't have any Ender's War listed. Is it the same book but named differently (for different markets)?

Anyway, here's what I'd pick:

1. HIS DARK MATERIALS (3-IN-1 VOLUME)
by Philip Pullman

2. DRAGONLANCE: THE ANNOTATED CHRONICLES
by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman

3. THE CLERIC QUINTET (5-IN-1)
by R.A. Salvatore

4. THE FIRST CHRONICLES OF THOMAS COVENANT THE UNBELIEVER
by Stephen R. Donaldson

5. A TOLKIEN MISCELLANY
by J.R.R. Tolkien

6. THE DARK ELF TRILOGY (3-IN-1)
by R.A. Salvatore

7. ENDER'S WAR
by Orson Scott Card

8. THE ICEWIND DALE TRILOGY (3-IN-1)
by R.A. Salvatore

9. THE HITCHHIKER'S TRILOGY (5-IN-1)
by Douglas Adams

10. THE LORD OF THE RINGS (3-IN-1 OMNIBUS)
by J.R.R. Tolkien

It's only mostly because these are the ones in the list that I am familiar with or have heard of. And the others in the list are incomplete, only 1 to 3 books of a series, and you'll have a hard time completing those. And you can't beat the 5-in-1 or 3-in-1s.

I'm not sure it's really called Ender's War, but I assumed it includes five of the books that feature Ender in them. Ender's War is actually the name of the short story that Orson Scott Card initially wrote and then later remade into the novel Ender's Game. However, it is possible that the collection of these books may have been called Ender's War.

Ender's War has the first two of the series in it (ender's game and Speaker for the Dead). The series is up to 7 books now they are...

1) Ender's Game
2) Speaker for the Dead
3) Xenocide
4) Children of the Mind
5) Ender's Shadow
6) Shadow of the hegemon
7) Shadow Puppets

I haven't read the series but would like to, maybe some day I will go out and buy them.

I'd go with the classics:

1.BLACK SEAS OF INFINITY
by H.P. Lovecraft
2.THE BOOK OF THE SHORT SUN
by Gene Wolfe (If you've read the other 'Sun' books first).
3.HIS DARK MATERIALS (3-IN-1 VOLUME)
by Philip Pullman
4.THE LORD OF THE RINGS (3-IN-1 OMNIBUS)
by J.R.R. Tolkien
5.THE THREE OF SWORDS (3-IN-1)
by Fritz Leiber
6.THE LOST SWORDS: THE FIRST TRIAD
by Fred Saberhagen
7.CHRONICLES OF THE LENSMEN, VOL. I (3-IN-1) GALACTIC PATROL
by E. E. "Doc" Smith
8.THE FIRST CHRONICLES OF THOMAS COVENANT THE UNBELIEVER
by Stephen R. Donaldson
9.THE ELRIC SAGA: PART ONE
by Michael Moorcock
10.THE SPACE TRILOGY
by C.S. Lewis

I'd go with these, however there are a few other books on the list I'd go with. It's a long list!
