I think the first book was classic. It had a mythos, it had politics, it had economics, it had ancient secret societies and fascinating history. It introduced ideas about what shaped a people and how a particlar person can be understood in terms of their history and training. It was beautifully crafted and the ending "History will remember us as wives" was shiveringly perfect. The sequels in my opinion were just books in a series.
My high school Latin teacher once told me that he deliberately avoided the rest of the books in the series and I've envied him his strength ever since. :-)
A lot of Herbert's other stuff is pretty good too. I really enjoyed 'The Dosadi Experiment' (some similar ideas in terms of shaping peoples) and 'Whipping Star'.

I've only read as far as Children of Dune but I thought it was a crazy good book! You wouldn't hear anything about the softening and corruption of the Aiel if there was only one book and I thought that was one of the more unsettling things about the theme.

I believe that Roumania probably does not have the same copyrighted laws as the rest of the world. I think this whole thing is nothing more than a very tall tale (not the existence of this work, but rather its legality).
Considering Herbert fils penchant for raking in whatever he can based on his father's fame and fan base, I also suspect that we shall see many more 'grand discoveries' popping up in the family vaults as needed.
Amazing how successful authors can write a book every year that gets published and still have time to hoard a few that the heirs 'find' a couple of years later. Then there is the whole VC Andrews concept to an author's death.

It's a well known fact that Herbert died before writing the 7th book of Dune, a sequel to Chapterhouse Dune...
But i recently found out that such book was published in Romania, and that the publisher there claims he bought the Herbert manuscript for that book from the american copyright holders as long as they don't publish it outside of Romania.
A romanian that i talked to claimed that the book was published before the recent prequels to Dune, and there are things in it that are mentioned also only in the prequels, so if the author of the book knew of them it has to be based on the real manuscript.
Anyone knows anything about it?
Why Romania? Why not the rest of the world?
What's going on here?

I just happened to read this board today and to my amusment i saw that one of the threads i started 5 years ago is active again :o
Well, i must admit that i haven't given this subject much thought in the last 5 years but good to know someone in Romania is working on the case Nicu.
My apologies to the people who answered my question in those 5 years but i wasn't really here reading.
Guess i'm here now if anybody who still remembers me wants to catch up on old times and 5 years of reading SF and Fantasy.

Hey FitzFlagg, i mean... err.. Rob B, long time.

But i can't promise i'll be as active as i used to be, we'll see.
