Ok to get some discussion going. What new Science Fiction authors are out there?
By new I mean have begun in the last five years, about. Who are they and what are they writing?
I wish I could answer this question myself, but I've been on a mystery/general fiction binge the last decade and am horribly out of touch with the latest in SF.

Well, I guess I could add myself to that list, having published four books, all of which are a blend of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and even a touch of Horror!
There's also a fellow Australia writer I know, Simon Haynes, who is producing a series of humorous SF novels. And William Alan Rieser, who has a great Sceince Fiction series, the Kaska trilogy, as well as some other books.
And one of my favourite, more mainstream authors, who is fairly new on the scene, but been around for a wee while now, is Jack McDevitt.

Let's see...Alastair Reynolds (Revelation Space, Chasm City), Neal Asher (Gridlinked), Adam Roberts (Salt, On - haven't read them yet but have heard good things.
Agree completely about Jack McDevitt. He really seems to be hitting his stride in recent years.
Erebus, excuse my ignorance...who are you?!? I'm Australian so I'd be curious to know if I've read any of your work.

Well, I guess the Erebus site says it all really. And I really hope you get to read some of my stuff one day!

Sam82, you could try dymocks.com.au. Unfortunately, the local online bookstores are not very good. They don't seem to carry complete ranges.

So what are these books about? What type of science fiction are they? Why did you like them?

Al Reynolds, astronnomer/mathmetician type - is very hi tech space opera on a huge canvas. A little too much of the tech and too little of the story in between for me in Revalation Space but I understand that Chasm City is a winner.
Adam Roberts, English Lecturer - only read Salt but very much enjoyed it. It outlines two opposing points of view of the same attempted planetary colonisation. Short and sweet.
As for other new authors, I've said it before but worth repeating, Richard Morgan's Altered Carbon which comes out in February is superb.
