YOU DON'T HAVE TO TYPE IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, ITS AS IF YOU ARE SHOUTING!!!! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif
Anyway, I read it a couple of years ago, and thought it was not too bad. A bit longish and preachy, but decent.

I was being light-hearted, worry not!
Anyway, check some of the threads below there is one about Card, and on the bottom of the page, the numbers lead to past discussion, where I believe Vernor Vinge was discussed.

Yea, Battlefield Earth is one of the best works of scifi I have ever read, and I've read a lot! It is an epic, really. L Ron was one crazy sonofabitch, but this book is definitely to his credit.

I must confess, I haven't read it yet - but I guess the L. Ron Hubbard - Scientology link may keep people from reading it. I was quite disappointed when it became clear, that the movie didn't come up in the local cinema - I was much looking forward to an evening with popcorn, alcohol and a good laugh. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

I read exactly half of Battlefield Earth, put it down and never picked it up again. I am not sure why, it was long ago. I need to give it another shot.

You most certainly do. It is a LONG book, but well worth it. The best part is that even when you get to a good ending, the book continues on for another like two hundred pages with a new story and evolving plot. It's like a trilogy that was never broken up. You'll love it. The problem is that the movie covers less than 200 pages of the book. Plus, the movie just sucked in general. There was word of a sequel, but the movie's lack of success might douse that possibility.

I can honestly say that that was a month of reading I would dearly like to have back. To me, B.E. was a completely and utterly boring waste of my time. My art appreciation text is more interesting, and I cannot stand that book! He could have told the same story in half as many pages. IMO

I thought BE was rather enjoyable actually. Reminded me of an SF version of a "ripping yarn".
Terl was hilarious imo. "Leverage, gotta get leverage..."
IIRC, the book seemed to open a little slowly, but just kept getting faster the further I read.
I'd never class it great literature, but if you enjoy light SF/F rollercoaster ride with a few laughs along the way (especially if you don't try to read any scientology crap into it) then you might well enjoy this.
