I saw that he has another series, it looked quite good. The first book I believe is "The Initiate brother" and it's set in a Fantasy world China (or Japan). Very oriental. What the story was about was what intrigued me.

I haven't read the Initiate Brother and it's sequel, but like many books they are on the to-buy list.
However, I did read his The River Into Darkness duology and thought very highly of it. His writing is very, very good. I would easily compare him to Guy Gavriel Kay, and based on what I've read of both authors, I like Russell a bit more.

Orbitbooks.co.uk really confused me. On there website they had The Swans War 2 as a release in March. Which hasn't come out. But now they also have it as Battle of the Isle as a release in August, which is part 2. So I emailed them, and they said the release date was september.

Please no. That sucks. God what idiots. They've had that listed for a March release date for so long and now it's september? How's that possible?
Well, Amazon.co.uk. has moved its release date to August. They too had March up at first.
Amazon.com have it up for August as well.
Orbit has it up for March and August, but now they tell you it's September? Why must they suck so!

I read The Initiate Brother. Very good stuff. Very intriguing, fast-paced, and characters you can really dig, all in a medieval Japanese culture.
The second book, Gatherer of Clouds, was the same though a bit weak in the ending.
As an indication, Michael Whelan did the cover art of the 1st book but not the 2nd one. What does this mean? Well, Whelan said he normally does covers for books he likes (i.e. he reads 'em!). The man has good taste in reading material, too.
