Shade's Children

Anyone read this? It's by Garth Nix, and Aussie writer unless I'm mistaken. I know it's been released in the land down under and the u.s., but not about the rest of the world. Either way, I just finished it the other day, and I really enjoyed it. It's well written, well paced, with good characters and a well realized atmosphere. And I thought it really had a hook in the beginning. Check this:

(this is a little paragraph from the openeing pages)

I've seen their videos, but I'll never see them. You sit in the dark, watching their faces as they talk through their breif lives, and all the time you wonder what got them in the end. Was it a Winger striking out of the sky? TRackers on their heels till they dropped and the Myrmidons came? A Ferret uncoiling in some dark hole where they'd hoped to hide?

Now you're watching me . . . and you're wondering . . . what got her?

Pretty nifty hook. If you're interested, I reccomend giving it a go.

Just read it for the second time. It's released here in the UK, too. Seriously good book. Though the romance at the end was a little unexpected. Shade's a really cool character, very realistic.

I wrote a grad paper on this book for my Sci-Fi class. It's an excellent coming of age novel with a lot to say about the interaction of young adults with thier elders and great use of allegory. I've moved on to the rest of Nix's books (he mostly writes fantasy) and I haven't disliked one yet.

Yeah, it lead me to read Sabriel, which I'm in the middle of now. Not bad, but not as good as Shade's Children. I do admit I haven't finished it yet, so my opinion could change.

I think it (SC) is probably the most underrated of Garth Nix's books. This thread was about the only interesting thing I could find on the internet about it, and the copy I got was free.
