How is Dune intertwined with how the world is today? I can see a few ways, but I want to see the whole picture. If anyone can explain please do.

Not an easy thing to do in a few short sentences, Eric! There have been university dissertations of 20 000+ words written on the book (that's the first one alone!). However there are a few fans here that I'm sure will help.

There are a lot of parallels, some of which I discuss in a forthcoming article entitled:
"View of the Icons" in which I compare Dune with The Foundation Trilogy. Let me know what you think when they put it up.

Seriously though, come up a few times in the past year where I'll be talking with people and it will come up how helpless we are, how incapable of surviving outside the trappings of our society, to which I reply, "Go and live in the desert. You'll learn everything you really need to know pretty quick." I always leave out the rest though, the last part being, "...or you'd be dead."
