What fantasy authors have managed to make it into the mainstream of literature? I know that Robert Jordan and Michael Crighton have managed this accomplishment.

Hmm... (putting on thinking cap)....

There are a few books that are required reading for students in varying grades such as T.H. White's Once and Future King and Ella Enchanted by Gail Levine. (Some science fiction titles are also required: Kindred by Octavia Butler and Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank.)

If by mainstream you mean commercial success, then I would say Tolkien, J.K. Rowling, Eddings, Martin, and Jordan. Did I miss anyone?
