No matter if heroine, female sidekick or evil counterpart – what makes you think: wow, this woman is cool, realistic, likeable (or being a villain: fun to hate).
You can either give examples or just imagine about whom you would like to read.
Or give examples of characters you don’t like with details why.

Well, maybe you don’t even care about female characters . . . :p

well... pretty much the same things that make male characters cool. :p

Yeah, I agree that if a female character is simply written realisticly, then they are fine by me.

I don't want any braid tugging, arms-crossing-under-breasts, or stamping of feet with temper tantrums. Some male authors have problems with stereotyping women characters.

Ezchaos - You forgot the smoothing of the dress. Do females really do that whenever they sit down or when they're nervous?

Althea Vestrit is probably the most realized female character that I have read yet . At times came across tomboyish and other times demure , she knew her physical limits and adapted to compete/work with the male crew members aboard ship .

Yeah I'd ask her out ;)

I'd have to say intelligence is a must, and the ability to act independently (not rely on the big strong male to do everything for her). She also needs to be able to take care of herself when hardship strikes. There's nothing that annoys me more, than an author writing a female who just sits and quakes in her boots while the guys come rescue her and do all the hard work.

Sure, she can know her limitations; she can be afraid and she can cry, and sometimes she can realise that she won't be able to escape all on her own. But she has to show a bit of spirit as well. She has to see opportunities that come her way; which could give her the upper hand; or which could help turn the tables for her; or which could aid those that come to help - not just sit and whimper.

I agree with Nevyn- I loved Althea for these very qualities (though I wouldn't ask her out ;)).

There has to be a chance of being able to score with her, no matter how remote.

Isn't it nice to see we have such deeply intellectual, and non-chauvinistic guys frequenting the place, Nimea?? :D
