The movie rights for Pullman's "Dark materials" series were sold a while ago. Now they got a director

None the less than Sam Mendes, the genius behind American beauty and "road to perdition". If someone can adapt the books withouth the slightest "Disneyisation" it's him, hopefully this works out.

As usual with films beign in project there is at most a 50% chance the film will actually be made, and even then the director could change, but this looks good.

If they don't pull any punches when it comes to the religious aspects, then it's going to be seriously controversial...

For those interested, and in the UK, the BBC have done a radio-play version.

I just finished the Amber Spyglass today and if they stay faithful to the story the bible belt is going to go nuts. Think of all the flack films like Dogma or the Devils got and they were nothing compared to this. I look forward to the Daily Mails annual 'Ban This Sick Film' headline.

Wow, has it really been almost four years, since I started this thread?
Time to refresch it then. There are some very nice pictures of the movie on aintitcool.com:

The look is pretty good, let's hope they don't oversimplify the themes of the book. Chris Weiz (American Pie) is now directing. I personally don't trust him to get artistic visions on film against the studio bosses wishes.

What do you thin?

The movie comes out in time for the next Christmas season.

I heard Anand Tucker was directing, here (http://www.philip-pullman.com/pages/content/index.asp?PageID=102), but I don't know how often PP updates this page.

Edit: Never mind, this page hasn't been updated in a really long time; it still has casting calls for Lyra as news.

According to imdb.com Tucker did the pre-production but left the project last may.

Well since they've supposedly had to drop any references to god and removed the anti-christian themse of the book I can't see it being every good....

Plus I really dislike Nicole Kidman... but that's just personal.

But at the same time, we're not really supposed to like her character, are we?

Cool, looks like there's going to be some big names involved in this one (judging from the pictures). Shame I never even finished the first book.

So you will have a kind of 'double hate' for her character. :D

In film that can only be a good thing. More of an emotional response from you as a viewer. ;)

I heard that they're considering leaving out the whole story about Lord Asriel fighting God.
Don't ask how they'll work around that 1. That's basically the centre of the plot.
