Speed Reading

Lately, I've noticed how my reading speed has been slow, and it's been bothering me. My question is if anyone here can reccommend any methods, books, or webpages that can help me boost my reading speed, yet still allow me to retain the material and keep excellent comprehension. Thanks.

Just a question on the same subject , is speed reading monotone in the sense that it leaves out emotion of the characters ?

Actually good question! I am quite a slow reader too, and any boost would be useful.

In the past i know that it had something to do with looking at the centre of the page, and letting the words on either side fall into your view to be 'read'. Business people use it a lot as it allows reading of long reports and still attaining the basic premise of the report and the main points. I think that maybe you do actually lose some of the flow of the story - maybe I am wrong though. To be honest maybe the speed reading I am talking about is the business way of doing it whereas there could be other types of speed reading?

I third the question.

To the best of my knowledge, the more you read, the faster you read. The younger you learn to read, and the more you read at a young age, the more likely you are to develop a 'speed reading' technique by yourself. I never heard of any one person being able to teach it to another, though.

I am a naturally fast reader - I remember though, that I tried to read a book slowly once, to make it last longer. Didn't work for me, at all!!

I'm one of those early age copious readers that Sammie mentioned.

Apparantly it has a lot to do with our ability to recognise words by their "shapes" - enough so that you could even cover the lower half of a line of words and still be able to "read" it.

I believe it's the upper half of the word that we are supposed recognise most quickly. Bit of trivia for you there! ;)
