Hi, I'm mainly a fantasy reader, but have read the occasional SciFi, and I would like to read a SciFi adventure that is roughly like;

A quest but based in a different galaxy with travel to different planets, great heroic characters and a sense of wonder. Maybe like the original Phantasy Star games on the old sega systems, with quests power struggles etc. I would prefer not to be overly techie as this tends to detach me from the story.

Space opera but with a little romanticism thrown in, that's what you want...
I advise you try the Lensman series, by E.E. 'Doc' Smith. It consists of 5 or 6 volumes, not overly long.
I has got all you mentioned plus the romantic aspect. Heroic characters, power struggles, other planets, wild adventures,... and, I think, somewhat of that sense of wonder you are talking about.
Of course nobody can be sure that it will be to your taste. You like it or you don't.

dennizm, yes, Skylark of Valeron in particular I did read too, it resembles the Lensman theme.
E.E. 'Doc' Smith does have this little family thing, doesn't he - these five girls in the Lensman series and then this family Dalembert...
