Question for Hobbit....

Hobbit,
You seem to be a major collector so I thought you might be able to help me with this question. I have 2 copies of a small press title that is signed and numbered. One copy is numbered 200/300. The other copy has PC (personal copy?). Which is the one that would be considered more valuable or rare down the track...

Thanks!

PC probably means "presentation copy", not "personal copy".

Presentation copies are ones often given to people involved in the production, such as the author, illustrator, etc. and are usually not numbered as they are typically added to the actual limited edition print run.

Yup - Llama's got it - the small press with the number on will probably be worth more.

You can get presentation copies that are numbered/lettered and they are usually worth more but usually because they also have something really nice and personal written in there by the author - you know, 'Dear Robert, this copy is for you because you helped me write it, love Isaac'.

Having said that the idea of 'worth more' is a touchy one - if given to you personally by the author, then it is obviously worth more to you, regardless of the monetary value.

Last cautionary tale - if we are talking money, then small press editions do not always increase in value. As ever, I would be selective and go for the ones that mean a lot to you personally, as well as possibly being of money-value later!

Thanks Hobbit and Llama.

That's exactly how I think. The presentation copy came into my hands purely by accident and has no more value to me personally than the numbered copy.
