What sayings, quotes, proverbs, epigrams, etc. do you base your life on.......or what inspires you?

"Fear can make you do more wrong than hate or jealousy. If you're afraid, you don't commit yourself to life completely; fear makes you always, always hold something back." - Philip K. Dick

The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for enough good men to do nothing.
and

There was once a man who decided to swim across the ocean. But, when he got half way, he decided to swim back.

another favorite

Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, only backwards and in high heels!

"Some see the glass as half-empty, but I just see all the dirt and water-spots that the lazy dishwasher left behind."

--me

(Just kidding.)

Some proverbs/sayings that I like:

"Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler."

--albert einstien

"A Scholars Ink lasts longer than a martyrs blood."

"Dream different dreams from the same bed."

"The more you learn, the more you find you don't know."

"The squeaky wheel gets the oil, or goes home squeaking."

"Vision without action is a daydream; action without vision is a nightmare."

"Even a broken clock is right twice a day."

"There is no shame in not knowing; the shame is in not finding out."

I actually know a lot of proverbs and what not. I don't know how strongly I live by them, but I usually like the way they sound.

I like loads, but a few that I take seriuosly are:

(can't garauntee that I get these right word for word)

"Death is as light as a feather, but duty is heavier than a mountain". Jordan (WoT)

And one that I can't remember where it comes from, I think it's a movie but basically it states that: "I want to be able to wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and not be ashamed about what I see"

"Treat your neighbour as you would expect to be treated yourself" definately worded wrong, but the thoughts behind it are from the Bible.

I also like the way it is phrased in the Analects of Confucious.....and this phrasing may not be exact, but:
"Do not do unto others that which you would not have them do to you."

Also from the Bible, from Matthew 7:1-2:
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." (NIV)

Along these lines, I especially like Gandalf's words to Frodo in ROTR:
"Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends. " --FotR, Shadow of the Past

I have tried to live by these concepts all my life.....I am sure I have often failed, but have found them to be important guiding principles.
