The Dune Prequels

I've finally finished Dune: House Corinno and I'm wondering what others thought of this series. Personally, I was fairly disappointed. I thought the writing was very amateurish and lacked polish. And obvious clunkers like repeated mentions of Feng Shui really got on my nerves.

Having said that, I didn't envy Brian Herbert at all when I read a few years ago that the prequels were in the works. Like many people, I consider Dune to be one of the greatest - maybe the greatest - SF novels. Any tinkering was probably always going to put me off-side.

I am looking forward to the next series by Brian Herbert & Kevin J Anderson which deals with events in the Dune universe long before those we are familiar with. Dune: Butlerian Jihad is published later this year.

I liked them. They were entertaining books but very much inferior to the Frank Herbert masterpieces.

I too am looking forward to the Butlerian Jihad stories shoule be interesting to get more info on this era of the Duniverse.

I think the authors will have a better reception to these new novels as very little is known about the events and personalities of this era of the Duniverse (I like that...never heard it before!) so there will be less baggage for fans to bring to their reading.

I tried the first of the prequels but I didn't finish it.

I think that, generally, sequels (or in this case prequels) by another hand hardly ever work out. The reason being that the books they're following on from are usually classics, and they're being made for purely commercial reasons.

In the case of the Dune prequels, they lack the feel of the originals and the stories that they tell are quite unadventurous and unoriginal. It doesn't help that they're written by that hack, Kevin. J. Anderson.

Then again, perhaps I'd be able to enjoy the books if I tried them now. I was a week into trying to quit smoking when I bought the book, and the constant cravings and restlessness might have had something to do with me not being able to relax and enjoy the story... n ;)
