What's with the two parts of A Storm of Swords? In the bookshops, paperbacks are sold separately as Steel and Snow and Blood and Gold, yet the hardback in the library is just called A Storm of Swords. Can anyone explain this? No spoilers please as I have not even read Clash of Kings yet.

I think that in the UK edition the book was split into two parts, not sure about the US edition. It's a damn long book but worth every page. :)

That's what happened. It's a sad trend as fat fantasy (and Sf!) gets too big for a paperback.
Recent culprits include Tad Williams's To Green Angel Tower and Peter F Hamilton's Night's Dawn series.
IMO buy the HB (which, if bought online, is as cheap or cheaper than the two PB's) or get the Book Club edition (PB size but HB). The HB is of course usually out 6 months to a year earlier than the PB too. :D
Not saying how your wrists will cope though. :)

if i remember right, after the hardback, there was an oversized softback at £9.99, which was replaced with the 2 split books

The selection on Amazon is still confusing though. As expected, there are the two separate paperbacks.
But there also seems to be the Oversize Paperback (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0553381709/qid=1058205989/sr=1-7/ref=sr_1_3_7/202-4216996-2334257) FB mentioned
Then there is theCheap US edition??? (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/055357342X/qid=1058206055/sr=1-12/ref=sr_1_2_12/202-4216996-2334257)
Has the Hardback gone out of print? Cos I can't find a new one on Amazon, only used ones are available...

It's the same in Australia. Since I can't afford to buy all my fav series yet, I use the local libraries. They have 3 Game Of Thrones, 2 Clash of Kings, 2 Storm of Swords: Part 1 and they're ordering in 4 or 5 Feast For Crows! No Part 2 of SOS to be found! Thankfully I told my friend Martin's really good, so he bought all the books.
