Gratch... have you read any of The Brother Cadfael Mysteries by Ellis Peters, very good who-dun-its set in the time of King Stephen.
I have also just ordered some books of this type by a guy called Paul Doherty...Corpse Candle and The White Rose Murders, there is another, but I can't remember it yet. He is being heralded as the natural successor to Ellis Peters

I love the Ellis Peters books though at the moment i have seen more on TV than i have read. I find they are better to read than watch.
I have read a few of Paul Doherty and they are brilliant, especially one revolving around Robin Hood - Assasin in the Greenwood.
Have you read any Michael Jecks? He is definately the best for me, he writes so well you can really get a 'feel' for the medieval.

I have not read any of his, but I will be checking him out... thanks for the recommendation, it has actually surprised me how many writers there are doing this type of book, when I started out on Ellis Peters, I think she was the only one...
... I also like present day murder mysteries as well, notably the Morse books from Colin Dexter

Gratch... I was in town yesterday, and I picked up The Last Templar and The Merchant's Partner by Jecks... I will let you know when I have read them, but they do look good according to the blurb.

I read alot of mysteries......mostly historical....Ellis Peters, Anne Perry, Candace Robb.....also Tony Hillerman, Katherine ONeal Gear, Elizabeth Peters, Lillian Jackson Braun
Out of mysteries I love Hemingway, F.Scott, John Knowles, and Mr Shakespeare.
I enjoyed King's: Dark Tower. Did anyone read The Talisman he wrote with Peter Straub? That was a good one.

I think I am a bit biased because I love Hannibal Lecter, but I recommend Thomas Harris' series on him to everyone. Read them all, they are FANTASTIC to each detail.
The Red Dragon
Silence of the Lambs
Hannibal
