I started reading Gardens of the Moon on Monday night and I can't see why people are saying that the book starts out slowly or that it was overly complicated. I hope, for all you US residents, that Random House does publish this in the US.

The problem isn't that it starts out slowly, but the opposite. Things happen very quickly without the author providing a lot of background; there are all kinds of references to mythology and politics which can be confusing at first. It didn't stop me, and I enjoyed the book, but this has to be the reason that the publishers call it "too complicated."
