While I agree fantasy has been around for a long time, I'd say some good, pre-Tolkien modern (late 19th/early 20th century) fantasy can include: Hope Mirlees, James Branch Cabell, Lord Dunsany, E.R. Eddison, George MacDonald, and William Morris. I also think along with Tolkien, Zelazny, LeGuin, McCaffrey, Walton, Peake, and Lewis to name a few helped shape the modern genre.
