Ever get into a reading slump? Meaning, that you read a few books in a row, and none of them were very good, so your like..

Sigh.. What to read.. why bother..

What do you do?

Do you put aside fav authors in case of such emergencies??

I'm in a slump, haven't the foggiest idea what to read after 3 books that were ok..

I say reread a book you loved when you were younger.

Read something from a totally different genre. Or dig out one of your favourite books - unless there the ones you're bored of - I struggle to read a lot fantasy one after the other so I tend to break it up with biographies and other non fiction. Try something totally different and even if you hate it you'll probably have more appreication for the ones you've just read.;)

I am with Lucky Joe, if I hit a fantasy slump I will go read a murder mystery or a thriller book. Maybe a non-fiction book. I may even stay out of genre for a few books, that way the new fantasy crop is waiting for me when I come back. :D

I change genres or re-read an old favorite. That'll usually get me out of a slump. I seem to be in one now, so I switched to mystery for a bit.

Sometimes it's best to 'fast' and not read anything for a few days at least. I know this can be hard, because reading is a habit (for most of us) and like most habits, it's something that can be hard to break out of. I'm not saying reading is bad for you, but sometimes stopping is pretty hard.

Why bother? Because there are tons of great stuff out there. I tend to read most kinds of fiction so if I don't have a fantasy book I like, I'm reading sf, mystery, contemporary, romance, whatever, as other people mentioned. But considering that there are several hundred fantasy writers at the least, even if you want to stick with that genre, three books/authors you didn't like is a drop in the bucket. Of course, I'm advocating the wracking through your library's collection and some libraries don't have a lot of fantasy fiction, but if you go into the YA section, you'll often find a lot of fantasy titles that are perfectly readable for adults.

If that idea doesn't appeal, then it's probably best to go rent videos for awhile until the urge to discover someone new strikes.

I will always re-read my favourite books, usually its because i run out of money :(

But i do tend to have just a period of reading fantasy then switching genre to sf or some non-fiction works, its always the best thing if you get into a slump :)
