I have to say I'm very bad with my books. If its paper back it gets treated any old how, although strangely I do usually have a book mark for them, but if they get battered they get battered.....

Hard backs are a different matter though, first thing I do when reading one is to remove the dust cover and find something to mark the page http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif They get treated with all the love they'll ever need. And if anyone lends me a book this is how I'll treat it hardback or paper. However I expect the same from other people though as well. Which when you see the state of some of my books can be a weird double standard http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

It is strange with me. Since I live in Latvia, it is very hard to get my hands on even paperbacks in English, especially if they are SF or F. Therefore, I treasure every book I manage to acquire (something like 60 up to date), and am loath to loan them out. On the other side, I just LOVE illuminating people (yeah, as if they needed it) about what fantasy and sf is (people donīt know that in Latvia) so I find myself loaning Feistīs Magician, which is my favorite book, and other works out, and then getting them back in slightly damaged condition. . .life is harsh.

E-books are good on this count. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

I've just pretty much run out of room on my bookcases for books. D'oh! The nice thing about working in a library is having access to a barcode scanner wand http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif I think I'll just take a whole row or two from my largest rack and archive them into some boxes. Now to code up a nice mysql database and I'll be all set.

It should be nice once it's done... a nice web interface and links to amazon.com or bn.com for info on the archived books http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Recently I gathered up a bunch of books--usually SFBC editions that I've read and know I won't read again--and dropped them off at our little county library. They sell used books regularly to raise money, and public libraries are one government institution I don't have the least bit of regret supporting. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

The librarian told me a few weeks later that they'd selected a few of my books to actually put out on the shelves for circulation, so it's worked out great for everyone. I've got more room on my shelves for more books, the library has a little more money in their budget, and some folks are able to enjoy my old books. A win-win situation for everybody.

Thank you. I get a gold star? Really? How sweet of you! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Wait a minute...you name's Dennis Miller? I know you! I used to love you on Saturday Night Live! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

Just teasin'. I was reading your earlier post in this thread, and went "Wha...?" Then I read your profile, just to make sure.

Couldn't resist bringing up the reference, though. Do you get teased a lot about your name?

Actually... the Dennis Miller you are referring to is practicaly unknown in the UK, but I have heard his name mentioned before "Are you THE Dennis Miller"... my replay is usually "As far as I am concerned...YES!!". I think I may be the oldest, thus I am the real one. But... please... don't let that stop you loving me http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

My wife thinks I am a comedian though! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif
