Ehm, Phedre chose to return to her life as a courtesan at the end of the book, Lucky Joe? I might remember it all wrong, but isn’t that happening at the beginning of the second book not at the end of the first? The first chapter of Kushiel’s Chosen is at the end of Dart, at least in my copy of the book . . .
Apart from that, I can only say that ‘that’s what I am’ was very believing to me.

You're absolutely right, she did decide to go back to the life of a courtesan at the begining of book two (chapter one of that book was in the end of book one) and now that I'm reading Keshiel's Chosen it makes a lot more sense. And of course i should remember that we all make decisions about our lives that other people don't understand based on who and what we are.

I'm half way through the second book at the moment and it's fantastic.
:D

Yes, that sounds quite true . . .
I just forgot (and am again to lazy to try to find out myself): did you read the other two novels? Just wondering, because in those books the relationship between the two is explained some more and gets some new twists.

Lucky Joe, no prob. Happy to hear you enjoy Kushiel's Chosen. :)

I tried to read Kushiel's Dart a few months ago and failed. The writing style was very stilted and slow going, and I put it down.

Does it get any better further into the book?

The S&M thing won't bother me if it makes sense in the context of the story.

I thought the writing style was actually rather engaging, and the story really developed as the book progressed. Most people seem to have problems with the last 1/3rd, though, story-wise.

To be honest it was picking up the book and reading the first chapter that made me buy it and read it. I thought it started out really well and only got better.

Susf maybe this just isn't your thing, having said that though I would encourage you to give it another go, as I remember there was a lot talk about the angles and the history of the world in the first couple of chapters that I just let wash over me in the hope that everything would become clear the more I read.

Hope that helps.

Ok. I'll give it another shot once I locate my book again.

Yay - I finally got my book after all the shipping hassles and not being in stock & me not being available to receive it. Have read a full 3 pages uninterrupted, but it seems good enough so far & by the comments here it does look as though I'll enjoy getting further with it.

I know this thread is old now and probably nobody is reading it, but since there have been a lot of spoilers already, I know I can post this here:

in the next 2 books are there any scenes as difficult to read as the "skinning alive" scene near the end of Dart? I actually loved the S&M stuff and was wishing some of it was much more explicit, but that scene totally turned my stomach. I'd appreciate at least knowing whether Carey is going to do that to me again.

lemming,

right now I can't think of something in the second book - but the third book is the darkest by far.
There do happen some things that you might have problems with . . . or enjoy because it's more explicit S&M. *shrug*

Can only say: it's really really worth it! Especially the last book is great!

Hope that helps.

I certainly do intend to continue with the series. The world of Phedre is a fascinating one although the initial freshness that the book struck me with probably will have faded some.
