Poul Anderson Novels

Colonel Worf

I went out and bought a bunch of used books yesterday. I saw the little box on the shelf labeled Poul Anderson, and I thought "he's pretty popular." So, I went through and found all the ones that were 65¢. They're all pretty thin and look like quick easy reads...

The Corridors of Time
The High Crusade
The Star Fox
The Peregrine
The People of the Wind
The Day of their Return
The Night Face
Mirkheim

Anyone got anything to say about them?? :p

I may have bought a bunch of clunkers. I have no idea.

The first two there are brilliant, Col. Worf, though perhaps a little dated.

I do like Poul - hadn't realised how much until he was gone, sadly. :( Look in the archive for old threads about him.

I agree with Hobbit. Read those first then read "The Night Face". Its the kind of book you'll think about for a long time after you've finished it.

I read a little bit of Corridors. I'm lost. I haven't read anything but Stephen King novels since the summer, and Poul is very... vague. There are basically no transitions from chapter to chapter whatsoever.

Stick with it a bit. It is one long continuous narrative I think. There is a real sense of ancient times there though - developed in some of his later work.

I've read "The people of the wind" and have found it one of the worst books I've ever read.
It was also the first of his novels I tried, so I've read nothing else by him.

Yeah Duraccione, "People of the Wind" is not his best novel but don't give up on him. This grandmaster of science fiction has written a lot of Hugo and Nebula winning books and short fiction. Read "Brainwave" , "Tau Zero" , "The Boat of a Million Years" , "Time Patrol" and maybe his Flandry and Van Rijn stories or try some of his fantasy works like "The Broken Sword" , "Operation Chaos" or "Three Hearts and Three Lions".
