I got this from an FAQ on westeros.org

Evidence revealed in A Storm of Swords points squarely at Joffrey as the instigator. At the queen's breakfast he revealed, "... I am no stranger to Valyrian steel." (III: 663) Tyrion, suspicious of that statement, suggests that he will give a Valyrian steel dagger with a dragonbone hilt as a gift to Joffrey. Joffrey's reply is awkward: "Joff gave him a sharp look. 'You ... yes, a dagger to match my sword, good.' He nodded. 'A ... a gold hilt with rubies in it. Dragonbone is too plain.'" (III: 664) Finally, Jaime questions Cersei about the attempt on Bran. She reveals that Robert said in Joffrey's hearing that it'd be a kindness to end the boy's misery, but that they were all too weak. Jaime concludes that Joffrey, eager for his father's attention, may have decided to prove that he was capable of doing it (III: 823).

Now I'm just wondering, with those few words that Joffrey spoke, how did Tyrion get the conclusion that it was him? It should be obvious but I guess I'm slow "Hodor!"

Firstly Tyrion's quite a smart fellow, good at putting two and two together. He has also quite a grude against the people that did it, he was accused of the crime and almost executed for it. There may also be an element of story craft, Martin wants the reader to find out, but Joffrey is hardly suddenly going to admit it, so this is how we are told. Hope that helps.

So we're not really sure then that it was Joffrey?

Someone made a reference to Littlefinger doing the deed in CoK, didn't they?

OK yeah I reread the description of the dagger that was used. It was Valyrian and had a dragonbone hilt which is why Joff's statement "I am no stranger to Valyrian steel" created suspicions and even more so when Tyrion mentioned the description and Joffrey got nervous a little bit. Now the mystery remains, why did Littlefinger put the blame on Tyrion? Seems like this guy's behind everything. Oh Varys, I thought you were the master of machevallianism.

I think Varys only has control in Kings Landing, and outside of the city he doesn't have much control over

Well littlefinger is is very much a master when it comes to manipulation, and the game of thrones. He really has come out on top at the end, in a safe position in the aryie ( spl )

Ya, but thankfully, he killed Lysa too.
