What do people think?

I was disapointed that A Portrait of Mrs Charbuque by Jeffrey Ford didn't win best novel, but that disapointment was offset by the fact he did win two other awards. Also, the only other nominee in that category I had read was The Scar by China Miéville, and I'm sure the winners are very worthy - both Graham Joyce and Patricia McKillip are renown fantasists. Also a little disapointed City of Saints and Madmen by Jeff Vandermeer didn't win in its category either, but again, an award for Leviathan Three is great.

Otherwise, this list of winners makes me feel seriously under-read. Sigh...

Actually on the cover of Mieville's PSS it is called SteamPunk. I don't think his publisher cares what genre classification he is in they just want the attention and the awards. They are also pushing him for a genre breakout into the 'literary' mainstream.

On-Topic:

Someone asked if anyone had read A Year in the Linear City by Paul di Fillipo. Yes I have.

The best I can say is it is like getting all dressed up for a fancy dress party and then being driven around the block as the main event, rather than going to the party.

I liked the world and the things in it - especially the death rituals. But I don't think he did much with it. I thought it was mostly a tale of sour grapes. He seemed to me to be taking potshots at the genre (SF&F) which supports him, for not being truly 'speculative' enough.

I was actually boggled that it was even nominated for an award.

If he could flesh it out, and work with the 'scales', the zero block, and any of the death creatures I think it could be marvelous.

I was hoping that Paul Di Filippo would get the award for A Year in the Linear City. It's an excellent story and he tends to be one of the more overlooked authors IMHO.

Still, I was really happy to see him nominated.

I am very happy to see that Lloyd Alexander won a lifetime achievment award. I think his Taran Wanderer series is an often-overlooked gem of children's fantasy. I always felt it is better than a lot of other more famous children's fantasy, but for some reason doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Well I'm not a mod for this forum, but I'll try to split the thread.
