Let's face it, the Fantasy genre has a patent on it. So many authors use exotic names for their characters, to enhance that feeling of otherworldliness (probably committing some major crime against the Grammar Guild here).

Now there are a lot of long names which you can think of but mine's quite short.

It's "Fafhrd" from Leiber's tales. I mean what kind of name is that?! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif It slows me down each time I see the name.

Aside from most diffcult names, what's the most beautiful name you've ever heard of?

I quite like "Fingolfin"

I can understand what oyu are talking about. Dragon Lance has more than a few of them, so much so that I have to keep a piece of paper with the proper spelling of the names at my desk side where I type into sffworld. Magic: The Gathering has a few of them. Try some of these names for size:

Lararunastalsia
Orinthropers
Caramon
Crysania

Tzeentch. Klael.
I don't actually have much trouble with Drizzt (drizz with a t on the end, no biggie)

Tolkien is definitely the master of beautiful names (he's got some exceptional nasty ones, too). My all-time fave fantasy name is Janduin (from WoT). It's not that pretty, but it just sounds so cool. Actually my favourite Tolkien word isn't the name of a character but a story, "The Akallabeth". Sweet. I took the "A" off, leaving "Kallabeth" to name a D+D character, who became one of my best ever.

Tzimisce (pronounced zee-mee-see, I believe).

LOL saintjon. For years I pronounced Tzeentch as Tees 'n' teek (as opposed to zinch).

My brother bought the Shannara computer game and I was so happy cuz I could finally know how the names were prnounced, I kind of like not knowing exactly how they're pronounced though- it adds to the mystery. Like I didn't like Feist's names- Pug? Come on.
