HELP! Can't remember author, title or series name!

I need the author, title or series name of this series I'm thinking of. I read it a long time ago so bear with me.

It was in space, the spaceships though were actual ships like you'd see in the water...for weapons they had jettisons, huge crossbows and catapults...I think psychic or magical people had to sit in a chair to move them (not sure on this) I remember something like the main character had a magical cloak. The big thing was that they were looking for a legendary ship shaped like a Manta Ray. Anyone know what this was? Sounds like one of the old D&D Spelljammer books.

Addendum: the only Spelljammer books I could find were The Cloakmaster Cycle and they sound like what you're looking for.
