I'm sure I'm not the only one around here who has read a fantasy novel that has brought me close to shedding a tear or two. Heres my list:

"The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien
"The LOTR Trilogy" by J.R.R. Tolkien
"The Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn Trilogy" by Tad Williams
"The Otherland Series" by Tad Williams (technically it's sci-fi/cyberpunk, but it has a lot of fantasy elements in it)
"The Tyrants and Kings Trilogy" by John Marco
"The Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends Trilogies" by Weis and Hickman
"The Elric Saga" by Michael Moorcock

"The Lions of al-Rassan" by G.G.Kay
"Deadhouse Gates" and "Memories of Ice" by Steven Erikson
"Farseer" trilogy by Robin Hobb
plus some parts from the Wheel of Time.

I've read many good Fantasy books, but for books that are "touching, and emotionally poignant", I would have to say (besides LOTR of course) that the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb takes the prize... It made me cry more than once, which is impressive in a book.

Return of the King - Tolkien
ASOIAF - Martin (Every time someone dies who didn't deserve it)

I would have to say the Farseer books as well, along with the Tawny Man series. Other than LOTR, those have stirred me deeply.

Farseer Trilogy, definitely. And anything by Guy Gavreil Kay. I think he does it on purpose.Tigana was unforgivably weepy.
I nearly wrote Gabriel Garcia Marquez then!Wrong forum!

Another vote for Guy G Kay - A Song for Arbonne, Tigana, Lions of Al-Rassan.

Also The Silmarillion - every time I read this I find it unbearably sad. Kay worked on this as well I think. As well as someone called Tolkien :D

Definitely the Farseer books... and GGK has another good duology Sailing to Saratium and The Lord of Emperors... very emotionally draining books.

the bit in TTT where frodo and sam are in the tunnel near shelob, they're so afraid, but when they shine Galadrial's phial everything lights up and they're no longer scared...

for me:
The Lord of the Rings as a whole!
