Hey, I just registered here at SFFworld. I have read some fantasy, and I love it. What are a few series similar to LOTR? Cya around...

I always taught Feist was a little similar to tolkien. Or is that just me.

Well Feist does have the whole elf, goblin drawf thing going but apart from that they are totally different imo. Magician by Feist is a great book though and probably a good introduction to fantasy after Tolkien(was for me).

The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan starts out very Tolkienish, so if you really liked Tolkien you would probably like that. Its currently a nine book series though with at least three more to go so if the first book hooks you, you will have quite a bit to read.

Terry Brooks Shannara series from what i've heard starts out as a Tolkien clone. I stopped reading it after 100 pages as i'm not much of a fan of Tolkien to begin with and well the first 100 pages of LotR was better than the copy.

If you like lots of violence, rude language and sex you could try George R R Martins A Song of Ice and Fire series.

Any books by the following authors is good fantasy. Each have there lovers and haters but they are authors you should try:

Robert Jordan
Kate Elliott
Robin Hobb
David Eddings
J V Jones
Melanie Rawn
Raymond E Feist
George R R Martin
Terry Goodkind
Terry Brooks

They are the big established names in Fantasy.

Like Caldazar said, The Shannara Series by Terry Brooks is VERY similiar to LOTR. So much so that I actually refused to read it for awhile. When I finally did read it, I enjoyed it.

Welcome to the board Neslaup!

"Shannara" by Brooks is the book, similar to Tolkien. If you search this type, it is the best choice.
However, I'll reccomend you the "Belgariad" by Eddings- epic story with good sense of humour and nice characters.

Well!!! Hey yourself brother! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

The closest you will EVER get to Tolkien is Terry Brooks... it is practically the same book, the 'wizard' type person... Allanon, practically quotes Gandalf word for word... thus I call him Terry 'cut'n'paste' Brooks. But... there IS a good story going there, but he totally blows it in the latest books in the 'Shannara' series.

Yes... try Eddings too, he is brillant for a taster into the genre, but you keep following our advice... and we will tell you of better books. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

*looks around... noboby is watching... so*

Stephen Donaldson's The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant - The Unbeliever, is Tolkien with attitude!! I warn you now... you will not like the hero, in fact you will think he is a total bastard for the first book... but this series is IMHO... the first major milestone in the fantasy genre since LOTR's, it even has a ring!!! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I read somewhere that McKiernan asked the Tolkien estate if he could wright more books in Middle-Earth. They refused his demands but McKiernan wrote a serie as similar to LOTR that he lawfully could.
