I was wondering about what powers a communicator for so long and how the enenrgy cell is not damaging to the human body cause of the extreme life that it has to hold????

It's a TV show, and a sci-fi one at that. I'm not saying it's a bad show, cause I love it, but it usually doesn't make sense.

(Iit could be a crystal radio, but those probably aren't powerful enough. I might have the name wrong, but my brother used to make them and they didn't use much energy :-> )

Its simple… The power cell is made of ergga~A15xpo*. A highly fatal substance to organic life forms with prolonged contact. But what is never mentioned in Star Trek is that cloning is a huge conglomerate industry in the federation, heck the clone conglomerate tells the federation what, when, where and how. So as Starfleet personal drop dead after prolonged contact with ergga~A15xpo*, the clones, which are carried in cargo bay 15, are activated and a memory transfer is done. This explains several things.

1)The power cell issue.
2)The nearly limitless supply of extras that can be killed of during any episode.
3)Why they are always visiting a star base (clone restock).
4)Why the prime directive is constantly subverted. (new customers for the clone conglomerate)
5)Why the federation can never be at peace very long (clone business slowing down).
6)Why James T Kirk though infecting half the know universe with sexually transmitted diseases was never effected himself. (a new clone each episode)

Photonic energy is everlasting. Photons are nothing more than electrons in another form. I think we can interpolate that other forms of energy, even long lasting types needed for communicators, will be invented by the 24th century. Consider the new batteries being deployed now in cars to convert hydrogen directly into electricity. Anything is possible. I wish Roddenberry and his heirs were more exact about it, but SF doesn't necessarily have to be so long as it postulates the probable.
