The Dragons are evil fo the simple fact that they were bred, and nurtured by Mr. Morgoth and as such are his spawns through and through.

dragons in tolkien were evil because their great greed caused them to hoard the gold of hard working honest dwarves. Also I think in the dragons there is a touch of commentary on governments that drain the people of thier wealth for the benefit of the ruler.

Kay so given this in the more modern stories and the fact that dragon=morally ambiguous are all our stories now going to be 2 species in constant bafflement of each other and themselves? :D

P.S. Curious about where Morgoth got his breeding stock for dragons myself. Maybe for the winged dragons he took his wyrm stock and crossed with some captured eagles he then warped. As for the wyrm, no idea. Various large unseemly reptiles I have to guess at this point. Given the god could start with an elf and wind up with an orc it would seem he get it from just about anywhere.
