I have seen this book mentioned in a few threads but cannot find it in Amazon.com us. Is it only published in the UK? What is it about? How good is it? How does it compare to Erikson or Martin? Or is it more in the lines of McKillip or Bujold? Thanks for any information on this book.

I have not read any of Dunnett's works, Sue, allthough I certainly plan to, because they look awesome! But Dorothy Dunnet's novels aren't fantasy, they're epic historical fiction, dealing with all the wars and intrigues of England, Scotland, Ireland, and all the other countries under the British Empire in the dark ages. Hope this helps! :D

It is well worth reading. Did it not say in any of the other threads that it was historical fiction? They are probably my favourite series. the intrigue, politics, and attention to detail. Dorothy Dunnet is an MBE, and I should think a well respected historian. So go for it. But I don't think this thread belongs here as it isn't fantasy!

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place. I saw her name in a post of JohnH in the thread 2003 Pending Releases in the fantasy forum. He mentioned her as an aside in reference to another author, so I got curious as JohnH is seems to be on target with a lot of his recommendations. Not knowing what genre she belonged to I started looking in Amazon.com. I just assumed she was fantasy. But I do enjoy historical fiction and English/Scots/Welsh/Irish history was my favorite. Maybe it is time to check this genre out again. So I think I will try to find this author. Just does anyone know if she is published in the US.

If this thread needs to be moved please do so. Thanks.

Heh, I was just about to say I could check for you the next time I work, but you already ordered it. I work at a book store in Maryland.

Happy reading! I found the first book a bit slow going, but it is worth it as the pace gets going - let me know how you get on as I saw a really good interview with her about it, which I would like to share but can't until you get to the end!!
And noone can complain if you saw them in a fantasy thread.

:)
