What are your feeling on this?

Personally, I think that Original Music should be used in all period films (for the sake of argument, from the mid-1900s on), it should reflect the times (i.e. Romantic for the mid 1700s through the 1800s in Europe, real tribal instruments in Africa, etc. etc.) and may include examples of music of that time, but should overall be music that is made specifically for the film if you are trying to make at least an attempt accuracy.

Non-Original certainly has its place, in films that are, say, set in the 70s and such, where people who lived then are going to watch it and will be transported to the times immediately just by the choice of music. Plus in a few years when your grandkids or whatever are watching the movies, the music will be appropriate still.

Anyway, I'm basically just thinking aloud here.....

Agreed. LoTR needed original music, something like The Wedding Singer or Singles should use non-original. Movies set in the present can just use regular pop/rock music as the mood dictates.
