Hey guys, can you help me decide what to read next?
Here are the choices:
Altered Carbon - Morgan
Dune - Herbert
Snow Crash - Stephenson
The City and the Stars - Clarke
Lord of the Rings - Tolkien
The Hobbit - Tolkien
Paris 1919 - Macmillan

It doesn't matter which you choose - they are all remarkable pieces of work.

I would recommend City and the Stars. It's one of the classics of the genre and one of my favourites.

Alphabetical by author surname is the way I usually get through my piles of books :) Either that or whichever one you've had on your shelf to read the longest.
As mugwump says, it's pretty hard to go wrong with that list.

Dune is my favorite of those mentioned, with Altered Carbon a distant second.

If you're going to read Tolkein, read "The Hobbit" before you read "Lord of the Rings."

Close your eyes and point a finger. Go with it. Because I'll tell you, if my 'to read' pile looked as good as that, I'd be a very happy man.
Altered Carbon should be a fairly quick read. And it doesn't let up at all through the whole book. It might have been my favorite release of 2003.

I'll echo everyone else and say that you can't go wrong.
However, if you put a gun to my head and forced me to choose, I'd go with SnowCrash. Personally it is one of my all-time favorite books to reread. :D

If it's definitely about reading all the books on that list, I'd recommend you start with the shorter books first.
It'll give you a sense of accomplishment that'll encourage you to continue. :D
Personally, I can never rigidly adhere to a list. I can only tell you where I've been, not specifically where I'm going. I allow myself flights of whimsy and tangential trains of thought when selecting the next book. And I get into these trains of reading several books by one author at a shot. That's why I can never do those book clubs you guys have.
Although at the end of the year, I find I have read most of the things I had on one list or another.

This is just my opnion but I found Paris 1919 rather dry and boring.
