Is out. I saw it in stores today and would have bought it if I hadn't already ordered online. It's actually part of a series, subtitled "Book one of the Northlands series". I'm very curious about how many parts there will be, perhaps it's another duology.

Very nice looking book btw, and around 500 pages of story.

I'll be interested in your review when you get this book read :)

What kind of fantasy novels does this author write?

I found an early released American copy on the shelves today. It's sitting next to me right now... Yee-haw.

I can't find any mention of this being the first in a series. Perhaps they just broke the other version into multiple parts.

Anyways... looks great. It just got bumped to the top of my to-be-read pile.

You might want to start with " The Fionavar Tapestry " (trilogy) then on to
- Tigana (stand alone)
- A Song For Arbonne (stand alone)
- The Lions of Al-Rassan (stand alone)
- The Sarantine Mosaic (duology)
While there is magic in his stories the real magic is in his prose !

Rune: Not out here in the UK until April, sadly - though I guess it's not too far away. (and that does give you time to read some of his older stuff well liked round here at the Forum.)

As an aside - Are we on a Viking style resurgance here? GGK's, then Juliet Marillier's Wolfskin (first in a series) last year...

Hmmm..... I sense a connection. :D

You also forgot Jude Fisher's very well done Fool's Gold Trilogy (Sorcery Rising and Wild Magic)

I, too saw this book at the bookstore today. I'll probably buy it if/when it becomes available on the SFBC.

Yes, I do vaguely recall that report, you're right, it mightbe this one. I'll be going to the store again toyday anyway so I'll check the book for any signs of it being part of a series like the subtitles on the Net say. Ifit doesn't one can assume it's a standalone.

I actually don't know what I would prefer in this case. It's nice to have a good standalone as well, it's almost becoming a rarity, but on the other hand I'm really anxious for Kay to write more in this setting because it is one of my two favorite historical periods.

Hobbit,

The next Marillier, Foxmask, is coming out in March as well, I'm not sure if it's becoming a trend but one can hope. I do know that her next series, The Bridei Chronicles, which starts with The Dark Mirror, will be a "magical history" of the Picts and their enemies, both normal and supernatural. Which, again, sounds excellent.

I have read Jude Fisher and though I felt the author's style was very good :) , I didnt find the story kept my attention.
Not enough magic and too much clan history/plot.

Are Kay's books the same?
