I'm now reading the Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allen Poe and I'm wondering if someone hear can please help me out in telling me which of his tales and poems are dark fantasy/horror. I haven't read all of the stories in the book (wow!) but I'd recommend these:

The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar
The Murders in the Rue Morgue
The Fall of the House of Usher
The Tell-tale Heart
The Black Cat
The Premature Burial
The Cask of Amontillado
The Masque of the Red Death

Hop-Frog -- ESPECIALLY this one!

Just wanted to add a little something in the thread. Sort of an update on my reading of Poe's works. So far I've read "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar", "Murders in the Rue Morgue" and "The Fall of the House of Usher". Now I was wrong in what I said before, it was "The Fall of the House of Usher" that my friend Jessica read, not "The Haunted Palace". But anyway, "The Fall of the House of Usher" has to be by far the scariest, darkest horror tale I have ever read!! I was right on the edge of my seat while reading it! I quite enjoyed it! Jessica said that she didn't really like it, and that it was so dark that it actually depressed her! She said that she had to read it for school, and that dark, macabre horror tales really weren't her thing. Huh, I guess Poe doesn't appeal to everyone. But anyway, I'm fondly looking forward to reading the rest of Poe's works of dark fantasy/horror, and will keep you posted as to what I think of them!
Oh, and I really enjoyed "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" and found it delightfully creepy. I also enjoyed "Murders in the Rue Morgue", allthough I have to admit that it was a bit long winded, but by far did end up to be an obsenely boring ramble as "The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfall". It was more of a murder mystery than horror, though, but I enjoyed it nevertheless.

**WARNING!! SPOILERS AHEAD!!!**

I must say that I was quite surprised and a bit amused to find out that the murderer was an Orangutan! :D

**END SPOILER**

If you are looking for pure horror and shocking macabre then
'Masque of the Red Death' is the one I'll recommend.

Of the ones I'm familiar with, I'd suggest these titles,

The Murders in the Rue Morgue
The Mystery of Marie Roget [Dry and a bit long for modern tastes]
The Fall of the House of Usher
The Purloined Letter
The Tell-tale Heart
The Black Cat
The Imp of the Perverse
The Premature Burial
The Cask of Amontillado
The Pit and the Pendulum (I know this is horror)
The Masque of the Red Death
The Assignation
The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Feather [Satire of a sort, if heavy-handed, it's one of those that seem to have a bit of influence on other writers]
Hop-Frog
William Wilson [One of his great ones, but not as well-known as, say, "...Usher"]
Ligeia
Berenice
Morella
Narrative of a Gordon Pym [Even though it is short, I found it a long slog; of historical importance if only because it was Poe's only novel; it inspired Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness"]
The Raven (I know this is horror)
Lenore
The Bells
The Haunted Palace (my best friend Jessica has read this one, and she says its horror)
The Conqueror Worm (I know this is horror)
A Dream Within a Dream
Eldorado

I haven't read very many of Poe's writings (just what was required in school), but I would second the recommendations for "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Mask of the Red-Death". TTH definitely gave me the creeps. Strangely enough, even though "The Cask of Amantillado" (sp?) is supposed to be horror, I didn't find it particularly scary *shrug*....

Anyway, reading this, I remembered enjoying Poe's work and decided to add a "Complete Works" to my amazon wish list. The one at the link below actually seperates the stories by type.

http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Stories-Poems-Edgar-Allan/dp/0385074077/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-8941119-1379017?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1179494620&sr=8-1

If you do the "Search Inside" you can see how they seperated them. Might be helpful.
